RYA DAY SKIPPER SHOREBASED COURSE at St Andrews Sailing Club - Spring 2024

The first time you navigate safely to a new destination will give you an immense feeling of satisfaction.


Luke Rendell (assisted this year by John Monteith) will run this popular RYA Day Skipper shore-based course again in Spring 2024 . You are invited to apply and ask family and friends to do likewise.

The course is 40 hrs in total, plus homework and time for the exam.

Dates.  The course will run at St. Andrews Sailing Club clubhouse as follows:

Intro evening:

Wed. 28 Feb 2024 (1900-2100)

1st weekend:

9 -10 March 2024 (0900-1600)

2nd weekend:

23 -24 March 2024 (0900-1600)

3rd weekend:

6 -7 April 2024 (0900-1600)

 Cost. £355 - which includes: Tuition, Day Skipper Student pack, Training Almanac, Rules of the Road, and Portland Course plotter and Divider Kit. If you already have any of these, the cost will be adjusted.

Purpose and Syllabus. The Day Skipper Shorebased Course is a comprehensive introduction to chart work, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising.  Some experience of sailing, usually dinghies, is useful but not essential.  The course will include:

Basics of seamanship

  • Essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage.
  • Chartwork.
  • Electronic charts.
  • Position fixing.
  • Plotting a course to steer.
  • Weather forecasting and meteorology.
  • Tides.
  • Collision regulations.
  • Construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat.
  • Emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and life rafts.

Literature.  You may wish to buy other RYA books, and these can be purchased through the Club at a slightly reduced rate. You can order these at the introductory evening, when some of the books will be on display.  The following are included in the cost of the course:
