RYA DAY SKIPPER SHOREBASED COURSE at St Andrews Sailing Club - Winter/Spring 2025

The first time you navigate safely to a new destination will give you an immense feeling of satisfaction.

John Monteith and Luke Rendell will again run this popular RYA Day Skipper shore-based course -this Winter 2025.
You are invited to apply and ask family and friends to do likewise.
The course is 40 hrs in total, plus homework and time for the exam. 

Dates.  The course will run at St. Andrews Sailing Club clubhouse as follows:

Intro evening:

Wed - 8 January 2025 (1900-2100)

1st weekend:

11-12 January 2025 (0900-1600)

2nd weekend:

1-2 February 2025 (0900-1600)

3rd weekend:

1-2 March (0900-1600)

Cost. £375 - which includes: Tuition, Day Skipper Student pack, Training Almanac, Rules of the Road, and Portland Course plotter and Divider Kit. If you already have any of these, the cost will be adjusted.

Purpose and Syllabus
The Day Skipper Shorebased Course
is a comprehensive introduction to chart work, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship.
A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising. Some experience of sailing, usually dinghies, is useful but not essential.
The course will include:

Basics of seamanship

  • Essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage.
  • Chartwork.
  • Electronic charts.
  • Position fixing.
  • Plotting a course to steer.
  • Weather forecasting and meteorology.
  • Tides.
  • Collision regulations.
  • Construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat.
  • Emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and life rafts.

You may wish to buy other RYA books, and these can be purchased through the Club at a slightly reduced rate.
You can order these at the introductory evening, when some of the books will be on display.
